There are 7 horses who belong at Jed's Run. There are also some thoroughbred broodmares, foals and weanlings/yearlings agisted here.
Our herd lives on a track system, based on the Paddock Paradise ideal. This helps to manage their weight, and promotes movement. They come in twice per day for a small feed and to check their health, and for a pat of course! Some of the horses also take part in Equine Facilitated Learning (EFL) sessions.
Born: 2012
Breed: Quarter horse x Riding Pony
Sex: Mare
About: Avi is the lead mare in the herd. She loves to hang out with the geldings. Avi was given to Sam as a weanling, and has been with her the longest of all the herd. She has never been ridden, but is a lovely girl to work with and often takes part in EFL sessions. She really enjoys being groomed and fussed over, although if there is grass around she can be quite cheeky!
Born: 2012
Breed: Quarter Horse
Sex: Gelding
About: Billy was the herd leader before Samurai arrived, but now happily follows him. He is a gentle boy who gets along with everyone. Billy was purchased as a 3yo. He was ridden when he was younger, but he doesn’t particularly like it so these days he is not required for that. He often takes part in EFL sessions, trying his best to do what is asked of him.
Born: 2002
Breed: Standardbred
Sex: Gelding
About: Sammi is the leader of the herd. The biggest horse here (until Willow arrived), he is a gentle giant and the others mostly just get out of his way! He arrived at the end of 2020 after being rescued from the sales by someone else and retrained. Sammi is still ridden on trail rides occasionally, and often takes part in EFL sessions. He is very well behaved, although sometimes takes a bit more time to organize where his big body is!
Born: 2007
Breed: Appaloosa x Welsh Pony
Sex: Mare
About: Prise was purchased in 2015, and was Sam’s Mounted Games pony for a few years. She was wonderful to ride and very fast! She was retired in 2017 due to some problems with her back, and now lives a life of relaxation in the herd. Prise rarely takes part in EFL sessions, as she doesn’t particularly enjoy being groomed, but she does sometimes like to simply hang out with people.
Born: 2015
Breed: Quarter Horse
Sex: Mare
About: Gem was purchased from the sales in 2019 (with Keegan as her foal at foot) to save them from going to the knackery. She is a beautiful girl and has been a wonderful mother to Keegan. She’s still very wary of people she doesn’t know, but is slowly gaining the confidence to sniff hands and accept the occasional pat! She does not take part in EFL sessions.
Born: 2019
Breed: Quarter Horse
Sex: Filly
About: Keegan was purchased with her mother Gem when she was just a tiny, weeks-old foal. She has grown up with the herd and is very bonded to them, especially her mother. Keegan is cheeky and inquisitive, and loves to spend time with people. She will take part in EFL sessions in future, when she has more training and maturity under her belt.
Born: 2009
Breed: Morgan x Standardbred
Sex: Gelding
About: Willow is a fairly recent arrival, and is on loan from a friend. He is a sweet big boy who tries very hard, and enjoys calm cuddles. He has had quite a lot of groundwork training in the past, and we're excited to see how he goes working with clients in EFL.
Two wonderful dogs are permanent residents, after our recent loss of the beautiful old man Bruce. We quite often have a foster dog as well. Links will be added here when we have one!
The dogs are almost always with the people, either out and about on the farm or chilling on the couch.
Paxton
Born: 2019
Breed: Bitsa (likely an American bulldog cross)
Sex: neutered male
About: Paxton was adopted in 2022 from Wodonga Dog Rescue, along with his foster sister Tilly. They’ve been best mates since they first met. Pax lost a hind leg due to an untreated infection before he was surrendered to the rescue, but he gets around really well! He is a happy-go-lucky boy who is super friendly with all people and dogs (although he looks a bit scary when he gets over-excited to meet new pups!). A bit of a boof-head, he loves to snuggle up on the couch with us in the evenings.
Tilly
Born: 2021
Breed: Bitsa (your guess is as good as mine!)
Sex: speyed female
About: Tilly was adopted along with Paxton in 2022 from Wodonga Dog Rescue. She can be a little bit timid, but loves everyone! She’s a real snuggler, and is our shadow on the farm. Her long fluffy hair often has burrs and dirt stuck in it as she loves to explore. She’s also very smart and knows a few tricks. Tilly is usually the helper when we have foster dogs, as she is very well behaved when out and about and a cheerful and reassuring presence.
Foster - Lucy
Born: 2021
Breed: Maremma
Sex: speyed female
About: Lucy was surrendered by her previous owners along with a litter of puppies. She has clearly been an indoor dog and is very well behaved, happily picking a dog bed as her spot and staying there. We are slowly teaching her that she is allowed on the couch, and she definitely enjoys the cuddles! She got a fright by being chased by Keegan in the paddock, then being zapped by the electric fence, so prefers to stay around the house now. However she has so far been great around the other animals (although she doesn't like Peter cat getting too close to her!). We are doing more work building her confidence out and about, including on walks and car trips.
See her listing here: www.petrescue.com.au/listings/1061109
Peter and Shammy live here permanently, and we often have a foster cat staying with us too. Links will be added here when we do.
Born: 2013
Breed: DSH
Sex: neutered male
About: Peter was adopted from Forever Friends Animal Rescue in 2017. He is generally a shy cat - it took him over a year to be comfortable sitting on my knee, and he still hides from people he doesn’t know. But he’s also a cheeky and playful boy.
Born: 2016
Breed: DSH
Sex: speyed female
About: Shammy was also adopted from Forever Friends Animal Rescue in 2017. She is a tiny girl who is a bit timid but very sweet. She loves to snuggle on our laps in winter, or even sleep on top of the fireplace!
Shadow was adopted in June!
The three pigs love spending time in their wallow, and their favourite time of day is feeding time!
Born: 2022
Breed: British Saddleback
Sex: Barrow
About: Dumbo was adopted at around 6 months old from Strong Hearts Farm Sanctuary after he found himself in the pound with no one to claim him. He is named for his enormous ears! The boss of the pig pen, he is a friendly boy who loves a tummy rub and enjoys eating iceberg lettuce.
Born: 2022
Breed: British Saddleback x Large White
Sex: Sow and Barrow
About: These siblings were adopted from J&D’s Farm Sanctuary a couple of months ago after Dumbo. They are about 6 months younger than the big boy, and were born at the sanctuary after their mother was rescued. They love to cuddle with each other, and are very friendly and sweet. They enjoy getting a groom with the scrubbing brush!
Blue, Mandy and Moxie all came from a friend’s farm where they breed Speckled Park cattle. Born in 2019, each had their own health issues which meant they became pets. Blue has a neurological condition which affects his walking and proprioception. He doesn’t let it slow him down though, and still tries to run and buck when he’s excited for his food! He loves a scratch on the forehead or shoulders. Mandy was born with dwarfism and is tiny compared to the others, despite being the same age. She grew up with Blue. She is quite sweet and enjoys a pat. Moxie has a cleft palate, leading her to earn the initial moniker of Funny Face! But it does not seem to affect her eating at all. Moxie is still quite sceptical about being patted, although she’ll take food from our hands.
Milo and Otis are older boys, born around 2010. They arrived at Jed’s Run in 2023, after their previous owners moved off their farm. They are quite friendly and sweet, and fit in well with the rest of the herd.
Asher (neutered male) and Ivy (female) were born in 2017 and hand raised by Sam’s sister. They came to Jed’s Run in 2020. Little Ivy is quite sweet and enjoys a bit of apple, while Asher is a real character who tries to headbutt everyone (humans and animals alike!).
We have a mix of poultry who all live together. We have one Wyandotte hen named Lacey, and also have 4 Silkie hens (adopted from J&D’s Farm Sanctuary) - Safia, Ebony, Meg and Mac. There are also 2 Indian Runner ducks, Quackles and Winger, who live with the chickens.
Darwin and Wallace are Murray River Turtles. Born in 2017, they started their life as pets in Sam’s classroom. Once they outgrew their tank they needed a bigger space, and so have moved into an IBC pond at Jed’s Run.
To those animals who have shared Jed's Run with us in the past, we will remember you.
